Alficon

If you haven’t heard of Alficon. You will soon. Young guns and talented chefs Elvi Dimitris Zymba and Nikos Vorgias are cooking up a storm and making waves in Athen’s food scene. Promoting Modern Greek cuisine free from any constraints and ideologies surrounding the gastronomic scene of Greece, the menu is inspiring, and most importantly, delicious.

The name Alficon is made from the combination of 2 words: alfi (barley) and icon (as various iconic images which support local artists adorn the restaurant). This name speaks to the heart and soul of Alficon – creating sustenance that delights and supporting the local economy. Beyond the artwork, these guys collaborate with small local producers throughout Greece, aiming to promote authentic Greek flavours and the growing Greek natural wine scene. Vino di Sasso (Slavos), Tsaprounakos (Vogiatzis) and Mavro Kalavrytino Natur are just some of the wines you can expect to enjoy with your meal at Alficon.

We loved tasting our way through the menu. Highlights included a fish soup made with saffron, fennel and potato that simply bursts with flavour.

The dolma was similarly delicious. An interesting take on the traditional, this was served with mackerel and beetroot. Surprisingly, the flavours came together wonderfully and cohesively. It was one of our favourite dishes from the night. The dish of orzo also deserves a special mention. We loved this decadent plate of pasta topped with seared exceedingly fresh and plump scallops and crispy deep fried leek and basil. It was a hearty dish that was comfort food at its best yet elegant and refined. Dessert time continued to surprise and showcased the kitchen's versatility. The dessert of rose mousse with bitter almond sorbet was amazing. The flavours were simply a match made in heaven.
