Chocoholics Tour - The Foodie Trio Hits Melbourne
/In the heart of Melbourne, some of the best sweet delicacies are just a stone's throw away from each other, and now there is a way to enjoy these treats on a Sunday morning tour with Chocoholics Tour Group. This well organised walking and tram tour not only allows people to indulge in chocolate and donuts, but also sip on excellent coffee by Padre in the iconic Queen Victoria Market.
The meeting point on the tour is the iconic Block Arcade which was built in 1892. Inside this historic building, Haighs chocolate is where we get the first chocolate tasting. Manufactured in Adelaide, and with all its ingredients being sourced in Australia, Haighs produces some incredible chocolate and is made of cacao butter (instead of palm oil) which lifts their chocolates to another level!
The next stop on the tour was Chocamama which is also proudly Australian owned. This little store on Degraves Street has a huge variety of chocolates and confectionery. They also have specific Melbourne inspired products such as the Hosier Lane Bar and Honeycomb bar which uses honey from the rooftops of Melbourne.
After a short tram ride, we wonder down some Melbourne laneways to make our way to Krimper Cafe. This former gallery has been converted to a hidden gem which provides an extensive cafe menu and boutique coffee. In an industrial environment and communal tables, we are provided with a taste of Ethiopian cold drip coffee with floral and berry notes. Having enjoyed our coffee fix for the morning, we continue on the tram to the iconic Queen Victoria Market.
Our chocoholic guide informs us about the history of the market and the famous American Donut Van. The recipe of the donuts has never changed and we know why! The beautifully fluffy donut with a burst of jam is made on site in the small van, and is served fresh and hot. Be sure to eat the donut while it's hot to enjoy it at the best point. Following the donut stop, we head on down to one of the newer areas of the market where we visit Padre Coffee. In conjunction with local chocolatier Monsieur Truffe, Padre has created a selection of chocolate bars with unique flavours which are the perfect way to finish off the tour. Our favorite chocolate bar tasting was the Daddy's Girl which consists of the freshly roasted Padre coffee beans. The coffee flavors blended superbly with the chocolate providing a balanced sweet ending to the tour!
With a well-informed and enthusiastic Chocoholic guide, the Chocolate, Queen Victoria Market, Doughnut and Coffee Tour with Chocoholic Tours provides all foodies and visitors with a unique insight into the hidden treasures of Melbourne's food scene.
