East Meets West at Secret Kitchen
/Occupying the space which used to house China Bar Buffet, Secret Kitchen's new CBD location has moved this venue decidedly up market.
Enticed by the prospect of indulging in Giant Steps wines and Secret Kitchen's signature roast goose, Gastrology recently attended Secret Kitchen's first wine matching event. The theme of the evening was "East Meets West", pairing wines from the Yarra Valley's Innocent Bystander and Giant Steps wineries with elegant Chinese cuisine.
The dinner began with delicious, delicate pan-fried pork dumplings and king prawn dumplings, plump, fresh steamed oysters served 3 ways - with fried garlic, black bean sauce and XO chilli sauce and fried prawns with duck yolk. The prawns were incredibly succulent and stunningly fresh. NV Innocent Bystander Prosecco and Innocent Bystander Pinot Gris were perfect accompaniments.
Secret Kitchen's Signature roast goose did not disappoint. Leaner than duck and boasting a thin layer of perfectly crisp skin, this goose is worth returning for. The Secret Kitchen salt and pepper quail, buttery wagyu beef (paired with our wine of the night, the 2012 Giant Steps Merlot) and "Orange" dessert capped off a lovely evening.
Secret Kitchen boasts innovative, flavoursome Chinese cuisine in the heart of Melbourne's CBD and we look forward to returning.
