Gontran Cherrier Artisan Boulangerie and Café
/Collingwood’s French favourite, Gontran Cherrier, has released a new menu in time for summer. Since opening in June this year the Smith Street venue has seen 36,000 croissants fly out the door and northsiders have gone crazy for the signature squid ink buns.
The new menu has been created by resident head chef Travis Welch and features an array of breakfast and lunch options that will cater to most. Head chef Travis Welch ensures that Gontran’s vision of his native cuisine is executed perfectly, bringing a unique set of skills to Gontran Cherrier after gaining invaluable knowledge from working as a head chef under Matt Wilkinson at Pope Joan and at acclaimed restaurant Circa the Prince.
We loved the spring on toast - crusty rye bread served with asparagus, broad beans, peas and feta. For something heavier, do not go past the Cape Grim steak bavette. We loved the perfectly cooked steak (beautifully seared on the outside and pink on the inside) served with a generous serve of pommes frites, young leaves and café de Paris butter.
A visit to Gontran Cherrier is of course incomplete without indulging in some of their expertly made pastries. Alongside Travis, head pastry chef Kayte Perdrisat puts her expert skills to use to bring Gontran’s French cuisine to life. Her impressive career over 13 years spans posts at award-winning restaurants including Rockpool and Dinner By Heston Blumenthal. Think Gontran’s legendary croissants, baguettes, signature black squid ink bread, as well as a saucisson and hazelnut bun, chocolate and cacao bread, honey ciabatta and other Australian native surprises designed by Gontran.
