Magic Mountain Saloon
/From the creators of Cookie, The Toff In Town, Revolver Upstairs and Boney, Magic Mountain Saloon has a loyal band of followers thanks to its authentic Thai cuisine.
Renowned as one of Melbourne's most popular bars, Magic Mountain Saloon offers a large selection of cocktails and beers in a dynamic, bustling environment. It's reputation as a bar is not surpassed by the fact that it is also a very highly regarded Thai eatery.
Located at the heart of Melbourne’s CBD, a significant feature of Magic Mountain Saloon is its design - a fusion of industrial and contemporary.
We loved eating our way through Magic Mountain Saloon's authentic Thai menu.
To start the Tea Smoked Ocean Trout Cocktail was a positive highlight. The thick slices of very fresh Tea Smoked Ocean Trout were served with pomelo, avocado, young coconut and betel leaf. The dish was notable for the quality of the trout and the interplay between the tartness of the dressing, freshness of the pomelo and the richness of the avocado. It was a simple but well executed dish.
Similarly enjoyable were the Tapioca Dumplings which were filled with a flavour-laden mixture of lotus root, peanut and pickled turnip.
The most enticing dish we sampled at Magic Mountain Saloon was the Lamb Shoulder curry. The perfectly seasoned curry possessed the customary punchy flavours exhibited by South East Asian curries and was a great match for the beautifully cooked lamb which was tender and succulent. Together with steamed rice, the robust and fragrant dish was an addictive and comforting dish.
For dessert, Magic Mountain Saloon's take on the Thai Tea Crepe Cake was delicious. The wonderfully melt in your mouth and distinct layers of coffee infused cream and delicately thin crepes adorned with Thai milk tea custard alongside sweet and crunchy honeycomb were a delight when eaten together.
With a firm grasp on the fine art of balancing Thai flavours of salinity, sweetness, heat and acidity, Magic Mountain Saloon is more than just a cool Melbourne watering hole. The kitchen it it's own story - drawing in the crowds with a compelling proposition of beautiful and punchy food.
