A trip to down to Merricks Creek with Wine Compass
/Nestled in the beautiful Mornington Peninsula, Merricks Creek Winery has been producing some of the most stunning wines for the past 15 years and now offers seasonal share plates in a relaxed atmosphere.
The family run business is known for its Pinot Noir and this is due to their attention to detail in replicating techniques used in Burgundy. The team at Merricks use ice to mimic the temperature conditions in Burgundy to make their wine and to ensure the authenticity is maintained. These details ensure the wine is an award winner and a great drop to enjoy with some fresh produce.
With the bi fold doors open on a sunny afternoon, the cellar door is transformed into an environment which highlights the expansive vineyard and natural greenery. The share plates are locally sourced, and highlights seasonal produce which makes the perfect match with the wine.
We dined on the moreish crispy thins with Parmesan, prosciutto and rocket which had a lovely crunch and was balanced well with the just right amount of Parmesan. One of our favourite dishes was the roasted tomatoes with Main Ridge goat curd accompanied with ciabatta. The bread was fantastically fluffy and lightly grilled. The other dish of note was the Free range chicken liver pate which had a delicately smooth texture that melts in your mouth!
To finish off the afternoon, we made our way through a deconstructed tiramisu with Kahlua espresso. This unique way of serving an Italian classic was gorgeously presented in small shot glasses on a paddle board and served as a great way to end the dining experience.
Courtesy of the Wine Compass mini bus, we were on our way back to Melbourne, and at the recommendation of a fellow foodie we briefly stopped at Johnny Ripe in Red Hill for their famous donuts. The stop was well worth it as the cinnamon donuts were wonderfully soft and flaky (much similar to a cronut) making it a superb way to cap off a great afternoon.
In a relaxed and casual setting, Merricks Creek Winery is a great place for all foodies to enjoy elegant wines and charming seasonal produce.
