Oko Oko
/Oko Oko brings Melbourne locals fast, delicious and bang for your buck Japanese eating.
The restaurant specialises in Okonomiyaki, a savoury Japanese pancake made with variety of different ingredients. The word "Okonomiyaki" translates to what-you-like-cooked and that is precisely the concept behind Oko Oko. The Okonomiyaki options are extensive, ensuring you will find something you like. We loved each okonomiyaki we sampled - Each perfectly grilled with a nice outer crisp and wonderfully moist inside and served with a range of meats and cheeses so you truly can get "what you like cooked"!
The restaurants also served a range of starters such as crispy chicken karaage and pork gyoza. Of particular note is the Takoyaki octopus – Think piping hot balls of batter filled with tender octopus and crispy tempura bits - It’s crispy, gooey, delicious.
Oko Oko also offers a range of delicious rice dishes. We recommend trying the Teriyaki Chicken bowl. An absolute steal at $8.90, the bowl features tender morsels of chicken laced with umami-laden teriyaki sauce, all served with fluffy rice to soak in the juices.
The restaurant aims to keep the food experience delicious, affordable, fast and friendly – and from what we’ve experienced, it most certainly achieves those aims.
Situated on Swanston Street, where the CBD meets Carlton, Oko Oko channels the Japanese take on fast food and take out and is a must visit destination for the epicurious on a budget.
