Piquancy

Hawthorn’s new Indian restaurant, Piquancy (meaning a pleasantly sharp and appetising flavour) is living up to its name with an enticing mix of flavours and spices to transport diners to the streets and homes of India.

Mani Waraich’s and Ranjit Singh’s family-orientated upbringings in Punjab are prevalent in Babu Ji and is also at the forefront of Piquancy.

Piquancy is an Indian haven with a Melbourne twist. We loved tasting our way through the menu which features lesser-known street foods, which are light and perfect for sharing as well as classic Indian dishes that go perfectly with rice.

Our top picks off the menu's "From the Street" section include the Beetroot Paneer - a stunning beetroot marinated curd cheese served with vegetables charred in a tandoori oven as well as the Tulsi Nimbu Fish Tikka which features perfectly cooked Atlantic salmon served with basil, lime, garlic and candied orange that boasts a great depth of flavour.

For something heartier and perfect for the winter cold, the menu's "From the Pot" section will have you sorted. Think luxurious butter chicken and melt in your mouth slow braised goat curries that go down a treat with the fluffy naans and basmati rice.

Our visit concluded on a sweet high with a duo of desserts - the Pistachio Kulfi and the Ras Malai - both wonderfully traditional and beautifully made.

Inspired by restaurants, street stalls and homes of every region of India, Piquancy is a gem. The dishes showcase high quality ingredients and expert techniques. The relaxed and humble venue celebrates Indian culture with an array of beautifully presented dishes packed with flavour.
