Railway 9
/Railway 9 is a new cafe oasis in Fairfield - A light-filled, modern eatery nailing the winning mix of top-notch customer service and quality cuisine, where local ingredients are at the forefront.
Railway 9 is chef Jack Lee's second venue after successfully running Point Cook cafe ' Bean smuggler'. Lee’s resume spans stints at 2 chefs hatted restaurants in Adelaide as senior sous chef. He also represented Australia for the Chaine des Rotisseurs international junior chefs competition in 2016 and won the prestigious 2018 chef of the year competition. Suffice to say, the kitchen is in safe hands with Lee at the helm.
Railway 9 is a welcoming and unpretentious retreat for visitors and locals. Here, you’ll find the team running the venue the old-fashioned way, waiting tables and slinging coffees whilst chatting to regulars.
Paired with their unrelenting philosophy to stick to the basics and do them well, Railway 9 is steadfast in their commitment to champion locally-sourced ingredients. We loved tasting our way through the menu which displayed a skilful level of delicacy and finesse with everything made in-house.
Everything we tasted was delicious. The ancient grain salad was an umami laden mix of grains with Japanese sesame dressing, cranberry, parsley, dehydrated kale and poached egg with beautifully roasted mushrooms.
The Vegan Magic mushroom was similarly delicious and a celebration of this well loved fungi - slow roasted mushrooms, dehydrated mushrooms with peanuts, pickled carrot on sourdough and finished with aromatic truffle oil.
If you’re a sweet tooth or just fancy sharing something sweet to finish, we highly recommend the sweet potato waffles – think Belgian style waffles with sweet potato maple syrup cocoa and almond soil, fresh seasonal fruits and decadent Davidson’s plum cream cheese. Just amazing.
