Sarong
/Sarong Restaurant is one of Bali's most revered dining institutions. A member of Chef Will Meyrick's Sarong Group, the award-winning establishment serves a curated collection of Indian and Sri Lankan-inspired fare, seven days a week. In-keeping with Meyrick's well-regarded reputation for merging innovation and authenticity, Sarong continues to be considered one of the island's best fine dining restaurants.
The ambience is luxurious yet relaxed. The spacious dining area is dominated by wooden furnishing, wafting curtains and bold chandeliers, anchored by a central bar near the entrance.
We loved tasting our way through the menu. To start Kashmiri crispy chicken with achari yoghurt, garam masala and green chilli served with date and tamarind chutney hit the spot with its aggressive flavours.
The King prawn salad that followed was similarly delicious. The medley of plump prawns with shrimp, pomelo, roasted coconut, mint, aromatic kaffir lime, duck egg, Thai basil, and mangosteen nam jihm was an enjoyable prelude to the substantive dishes to come.
For mains, the Tandoori duck breast was sublime. Perfectly cooked slices of pink duck moist pork belly, which contain the perfect layer of rendered fat was served alongside fluffy naan, pickled duck chutney, paneer kulchar and a sweet mango relish. Each bite truly gratified the palate.
The “Gaeng choo chee” was yet another triumph of a dish which had us fighting over the last morsel. The grilled prawn was cooked beautifully and served with Thai basil, kaffir lime and coconut cream. Just yum!
Dessert time showcased the kitchen’s versatility. Whatever you do, do not go past the Peanut butter parfait laced with chocolate honeycomb butterscotch caramel and dark Balinese chocolate praline. You can thank us later.
To match the outstanding food menu is an exciting cocktail list, made using premium spirits and featuring Asian-inspired flavours. The Frozen Coco Lychee Daiquiri was an absolute highlight – a heady mix of Rum, lychee liqueur, lemon juice and coconut syrup.
With a menu grounded in authentic Indian and Sri Lankan flavours paired with modern techniques, local produce and ingredients, Sarong pleases with a sophisticated and interesting menu unlike any other.
