Sweet Greek

Kathy Tsaples is the owner and passionate cook at multi award-winning Sweet Greek at Prahran Market in Melbourne and author of the bestselling Sweet Greek: Simple Food and Sumptuous Feasts cookery book (now in its third print run), and more recently Sweet Greek Life.

Gastrology recently visited Prahran Market's Sweet Greek where we met wonderful Kathy and learned of her story. Growing up in the Melbourne suburb of Richmond, Kathy learned the importance of family, religion, traditions and Greek food from her Greek immigrant parents.

Galvanised by her experience of surviving a near fatal illness in 2009, it was then that Kathy dreamt of opening up a little shop that would serve the best of authentic Greek cuisine. And so The Sweet Greek was born with a mission to awaken our senses and palates to the flavours, traditions and hospitality of Greek cuisine.

What it aims to do, it most certainly achieves. Sweet Greek is a wonderful shop filled with mouth-watering ready to eat dishes to take home alongside fresh salads and a delectable assortment of cakes and pastries. The store celebrates life and all the deliciousness Greek food has to offer with reinterpretations of traditional food that adapt oh so well to modern palates.

Kathy’s homely meals, outstanding cakes, sweet and savoury pastries, pies, tarts, salads and sandwiches have a huge and loyal following. And it is easy to understand why. Sweet Greek is renowned as a meeting place for Kathy’s legions of customers, where shopping is a social experience, a chance to catch up with friends, to talk and to share stories and a love of beautiful food.

The great thing about Sweet Greek is that whatever you choose to take home, you can't go wrong - it's ALL GOOD.

But if you need some guidance on where to start, our savoury top pick is the lemon chicken that goes amazingly well with Kathy's lemon potatoes. Bursting with a wonderful depth of flavour, these seemingly simple dishes showcase Kathy's ability to balance savoury, tartness and bitterness masterfully resulting in comfort food that keeps you wanting more.

For something sweet, do not go past her famous galaktoboureko and flourless cakes (they are all amazing, especially the grapefruit!).
