Theodore’s
/Theodore’s, a cosy ‘mixed business’ snack bar and refreshment service has opened in Brunswick, bringing a touch of nostalgia to the inner-north and is set to become a neighbourhood staple and local favourite for a quick coffee, a boozy brunch, healthy snacks, deli style items to-go, an early dinner, a glass of wine and everything in between.
Tucked away in a quiet backstreet of Brunswick but still close to the hustle of Sydney Road, Theodore’s is the creation of Lily Stokes and Henry Brooks. Having worked in the industry for a combined effort of over 30 years and recently becoming parents, they felt there was no time like the present to dive in and take the step towards achieving their dream of operating their own venue.
All food and beverage offerings are local, seasonal and responsibly sourced, with 80% of the menu being plant-based.
At the helm of the kitchen is head chef Andy Maybury who is no stranger to a busy lunch service, coming straight from the kitchen at Rudimentary. Having embarked on many food orientated trips, Andy’s modern Australian menu draws influence from cuisines across the world. The snack, brunch and deli menu is reflective of what’s best available from local suppliers including family operated Northside Fruit and Veg.
The food menu caters to non-specific meal time offerings - a little bit deli, a little bit tuck-shop and things you might find from street vendors worldwide. A place where it's never too early for a glass of wine and never too late for a coffee!
Standout items include the vegan pretzel sandwich. Fluffy freshly baked pretzel was filled with carrot lox, red onion, spinach and capers. It’s a thing of beauty. The okonomiyaki was another crowd pleaser. We loved this crispy japanese cabbage pancake topped with pickled ginger, bonito, furikake and finished with lashings of house-kewpi. The jaffle is also worth a mention – simple but simply delicious and filled with spicy kraut and cheese.
The drinks menu is extensive - with coffee from Coffee Supreme, mimosas on tap, a rotating local beer tap, tins from the abundance of independent brewers and a domestic vegan wine list from small, local minimal interference producers.
