Vegan Kamayan | Filipino Fiesta Season at Rice Paper Sister
/Rice Paper Sister are hosting a series of Filipino events to celebrate Kadawayan - collectively known as the Filipino fiesta season from August – October.
We loved attending the first event of the series, cheekily named “vega-yan kamayan”. It was a wonderful time of exploring Filipino cuisine in a plant forward manner with Filipino flavours front and centre.
As part of this event Rice Paper Sister partnered with The Entree Pinays in a challenge that brought together the traditional flavours of the Philippines together with a vegan, kamayan (a feast eaten by hand) menu.
To start we loved the crunchy beer nuts and banana blossom chicharron. To follow, a the local wild mushroom arroz caldo was simple, yet simply delicious – A heart-warming and luscious congee.
To follow, the pièce de résistance – a kamayan of tofu and jackfruit lechon paksiw, ginataang laing with sesame rice crackers, pansit bihon and bringhe rice. Everything was incredibly flavoursome. The ginataang laing was of particular note – a wonderfully rich and aromatic coconut, kale and turmeric curry.
Dessert time continued to please with a traditional maja blanca (a Filipino dessert made from coconut milk, cornstarch, corn and sugar) as well as a thoroughly modern and moreish banana and jackfruit turon with banana and coconut ice cream
Throughout the event, guests were treated to free flowing drinks including wine, cocktails and beer). It was certainly a feast that brought plant-based cuisine to the fore without leaving Filipino flavours behind and without a single sacrifice to flavour.
