Yum Cha at Secret Kitchen Chinatown
/Primely located in Melbourne’s Chinatown, Secret Kitchen is one of Melbourne’s leading destinations for Yum Cha.
We were pleased to have restaurant manager, Christine Yong (formerly Red Emperor, Lau’s Family Kitchen), host us during our visit. Delightful, full of passion and a brilliant sense of humour, Christine made our visit to, Secret Kitchen an absolute highlight and provided plenty of delicious recommendations so we could easily navigate through the extensive Yum Cha menu.
As expected, we were thoroughly impressed by our Yum Cha experience. The menu features an abundance of choices including a truly exquisite dim sum options and other lunch items available a la carte. There truly is something to suit everyone (even the fussiest of eaters). And yes, everything is fresh and made in-house daily.
Our personal favourite is the Black Truffle Prawn Dumplings. Think wonderfully thin yet slightly gooey dumpling pastry encasing perfectly plump prawns and bursting with truffle flavour and aroma..
Another must have is the steamed Steamed Red Rice Crispy Prawn Rice Roll– a wonderful version of the traditional cheong fun, this dish is delicate and is a textural experience with the crispy prawn contrasting with the delicate red rice pastry.
For something more decadent, the BBQ Roast Pork Puff will leave you wanting more. A decadent dish which wonderfully with the tender melt in your mouth roast pork.
In terms of the yum cha essentials like har gow and glutinous rice, Secret Kitchen excels as well. Expect these to be some of the finest renditions you will ever try. Picture perfect, everything we tasted was truly exquisite.
As you slowly work your way to dessert time, make sure you try the ever-popular Pork and Century Egg Congee. An oldie but a goodie, the congee is creamy and perfectly seasoned.
Sweet tooths will equally enjoy Secret Kitchen’s sweet Yum Cha options. Think Mango Pudding and Steamed Custard Bun. If you are a durian lover, make sure you try their OUTSTANDING Durian Puff and Durian Pudding. Some of the best we have tried, these are the real deal and made from Musang King pulp so expect these to be incredibly indulgent and aromatic.
Steeped in tradition but crafted with a keen eye for detail and a passion for pushing culinary boundaries, the new yum cha menu at Secret Kitchen is sensational. Guests are encouraged to discover and explore new and quirky dishes with its take on classic flavours with a touch of modernity, taking guests on a divine journey through the old world and new world of Chinese cuisine – a delicious journey not to be missed.
