MJR TOM
/MJR TOM catches the eye with its well-crafted timber fitout. Sitting at the back of the restaurant is a well stocked and large bar conducive to a night out or to catch up with friends (complemented by crunchy veggie crisps!). We were there for their new menu launch, which introduces some new flavours to traditional Spanish dishes.
As a starter, we enjoyed the Kingfish Ceviche, which was a very refreshing and engaging dish. We loved the conflicting textures of the Mack on Crack, with the slippery baby blue mackerel sitting on top of a crunchy rice cracker (but be careful, the mackerel is very slippery!).
The Mojo Prawns were crunchy and flavour-packed, grilled and stretched on a skewer. With a little bit more complexity was the Gastric Pork Belly served on a soup spoon, with pineapple jalapeno relish and crackling. More subtle was the Quail 2 Ways, which we suggest eating by ensuring you combine the quail with all the accompanying textures, including the bean puree.
To finish the night (which we enjoyed throughout with a few rieslings and a glass of Sample beer) we had the Beunelos, a goats cheese ice cream topped with caramel and served with delicious little bites of pumpkin donuts.
We loved the space and can see this menu being a real winner amongst the Collingwood/Fitzroy locals.
