Bang Bang @ The Boatbuilders Yard [26 February - 3 April]
/Melbourne’s newest culinary experience, Bang Bang, has popped up at The Boatbuilders Yard. The pop up will be running between 26 February and 3 April before launching its eatery and bar in Elsternwick later this year.
Matthew Dunbar, previous Head Chef of Longrain Melbourne, will lead the Bang Bang kitchen which celebrates the fresh and vibrant flavours of Indochina; Laos, Vietnam, Thailand and Cambodia whilst emphasising the French colonial influence on the local cuisine.
Food lovers can expect a varied and eclectic menu including dishes such as beef jerky with kaffir lime, chilli and cashews, steamed river fish in banana leaf with dill and basil and green papaya salad with crisp soft shell crab. Dishes are designed for sharing and snacking, allowing diners the opportunity to experiment with different flavours and tastes.
We absolutely adored tasting our way through the menu. The lemongrass, vietnamese mint and beef wrapped in betel leaf with nuoc chom to dip is full of flavour. For something more exotic, we recommend the barramundi steamed in banana leaf with sticky rice, tomato relish and taro chips. It was a dish which exerted profound influences of the Indochine cuisine and featured dazzlingly fresh barramundi cooked with the perfect salt-sour-heat balance.
The pop-up provides foodies with a rare opportunity to sample the menu ahead of Bang Bang opening its’ doors in Elsternwick and Matthew is keen to develop the menu in collaboration with feedback from some of the first customers.
Bang Bang will officially open in September as an all¬-day eatery and bar in the former Elsternwick rifle club originally established in the 1860s. Hospitality entrepreneurs Richie Ludbrook and Dave Sharry are thrilled to be adding this venue to their successful portfolio which includes Riverland, The Boatbuilders Yard, Pilgrim and The Wye River General Store and Café.
