District 5
/District 5 is an Ascot Vale joint serving unpretentious and delicious pub food. Everything comes in the most generous sizing and priced from $12 which means this place gives you the soundest bang for your buck.
We thoroughly enjoyed tasting our way through their no-frills menu.
For mains the 300g grass fed porterhouse steak served with chips, salad and your choice of sauce (the pepper sauce is our top pick) is a house staple which has regulars hooked. We liked that the steak was beautifully tender and cooked to our liking. At $12, it's a serious value proposition - and this theme is consistent throughout the menu.
The Vietnamese beef stew (Bo Kho) was similarly well prepared. Tender morsels of beef in an aromatic broth is served with bread or steamed rice.
Another favourite is the roasted lamb rump steak. Like the porterhouse, it comes with a generous serve of chips, salad and sauce.
No frills, respectable and honest pub grub at more than reasonable prices is the name of the game here and it simply works.
