Eat A Scroll
/The bakehouse formerly known as Pop Up Scroll has a new name, a new home and now, new flavours.
Eat A Scroll came to cinnamon-scented life when Julian Chew (ex-owner of Ivanhoe's popular Lip Café and chef), discovered that his cafe was regularly selling out of their classic scrolls. Julian found himself baking dozens upon dozens of scrolls each morning to keep up with the demand of customers who had travelled across town to seek a dose of nostalgia (and buttery pastry). Combining forces with his creative wife Tammy, a retro-style, pop-up bakehouse was soon born on Collingwood's Smith Street.
Since then the freshly dubbed Eat a Scroll has found a permanent bakehouse just a few doors down from the original site and continues to offer an old-fashioned reward that, remains one of life's greatest pleasures.
Each scroll is made using techniques learnt from Julian’s impressive fine dining pastry training but in a way that brings it to the every day. Lovingly made, the collection of scrolls is chemical and additive free and uses organic ingredients.
Alongside freshly baked scrolls which are made on site each morning the store offers carefully prepared Coffee Supreme coffees.
Eat A Scroll continues to serve their famous original scroll - frosted with dreamy cream cheese - alongside more adventurous creations topped with Snickers or caramel and Nutella or pistachio and cherry, mini scrolls and croissants expand the line-up. And, while scrolls are the heroes here, Eat A Scroll is gathering a cult following for their "cruffins" (that delicious love child of a croissant and a muffin).
The original cinnamon scroll is one of our favourites. Julian weaves his magic and turns moist, light dough into fresh, aromatic cinnamon rolls topped with rich, cream cheese frosting and infused with cinnamon and brown sugar. The scrolls are a blissful indulgence. Perfectly sweet, they boast a beautiful cinnamon aroma and taste.
Another winning flavour is Pop Up Scroll’s salted caramel scrolls. The scrolls were fluffy and moist on the inside and were topped and filled with velvety, decadent salted caramel. The slightly savoury buttery flavour cuts through the richness of the scroll, resulting in a dessert that is not only incredibly indulgent, but very well balanced.
We also loved sampling the custard filled cruffin - Light and fluffy, filled with oozy custard, we loved this clever rendition.
Scrolls may have been almost forgotten but the success of Pop Up Scroll and now, Eat a Scroll insists that they are indeed, ready to make their revival and we could not agree more. Marrying the concept of simple, sentimental baking and great coffee with playful, colourful interiors and retro styling, Eat a Scroll is a welcomed permanent haunt to Smith Street’s bustling foodie precinct. The store is only new but is already full of patrons eagerly waiting to indulge themselves and fall in love with the smell and flavour of the scrolls.
