Elephant Corridor
/In a class of its own, Elephant Corridor is a stunning Sri Lankan and North Indian restaurant in Glen Waverley. We loved meeting co-owner Gerrard Velupillai whose passion for authentic cuisine shines through. "I don't believe in fusion cuisine," he says, "it only causes confusion!".
Elephant Corridor is all about respecting authentic and rustic flavours from both Sri Lanka and North India and the results speak for themselves with crowds continuing to devour Elephant Corridor's authentic delights.
The extensive menu features Sri Lankan and North Indian cuisine favourites such as butter chicken and string hoppers along with other exotic dishes you will not get anywhere else. The menu changes with the seasons, and utilises only the freshest ingredients.
The Chicken Tikka was our favourite starter. The boneless pieces of chicken were tender, having been roasted to perfection in a traditional clay oven.
For mains we indulged in array of North Indian dishes before a further round of Sri Lankan dishes.
We adored the Sri Lankan Devilled Prawns. Plump marinated tiger prawns are cooked in a spicy sauce and served on aromatic banana leaf. For vegetarians (or anyone, really) the Polos curry is a showstopper. Featuring tender green jackfruit and a wonderful array of Sri Lankan spices, this curry had a wonderful depth of flavour and was incredibly memorable.
The chicken biriyani also impressed with its luscious morsels of tender chicken served alongside perfectly cooked basmati.
Another absolute must-have are the hoppers. We loved how beautifully made these crisp, savoury, coconut pancakes were (with one featuring perfectly cooked egg encasing dripping egg yolk). Eaten together with delectably fresh sambols and flavour laden curry and of course a side of lunu miris (crushed red onion and chilli), these were an absolute delight.
Oh and the naans from Elephant Corridor are sensational, acting as the perfect canvas for the luxurious curries. Whatever you do, make sure you try the chilli cheese naan - you can thank us later.
If you have a sweet tooth the Wattalapan will conclude your visit on a sweet note. We loved this rich and silky Sri Lankan style pudding made with palm sugar, coconut milk and embellished with roasted nuts for a counterpoint of crunch.
Elephant Corridor serves up an extensive menu of wonderfully classic and flavour-packed North Indian and Sri Lankan cuisine in comfortable surrounds with excellent service. A great place for a decadent banquet with friends over authentic curries and exotic delicacies.
