The George on Collins
/The George on Collins is Melbourne's newest European-influenced social destination. The subterranean space which is housed in Melbourne's iconic Georges building, has just undertaken an extensive four-million dollar renovation delivered by award winning Melbourne interior design studio, Hecker Guthrie and it looks pretty darn slick.
We thoroughly enjoyed sampling the food curated by Head Chef Tom Brockbank's (Estelle, Pollen Street Social, No.8) whilst sipping on an array of cocktails.
To start we loved the drunk octopus - incredibly tender while retaining a robust structure courtesy of being expertly cooked. The "hot sandwich" is also another crowd pleaser - think layers of iberico ham, mozzarella and a generous spread of black truffle paste. It's pretty addictive stuff.
For mains the gnocchi is comfort food at its best. Fluffy gnocchi with a crisp exterior combined with tons of gooey cheesy goodness and beautiful passata. It's very simple but also simply beautiful.
Do not be fooled by the pumping music and slick bar environment, The George on Collins also pleases on the food front. It's a great and versatile space that will take you from Friday night libations to group dinner catch-ups over delicious fare.
