Gewürzhaus Herb and Spice Merchants

When Melbourne sisters Eva and Maria Konecsny were looking to further expand their ever-growing spice empire described as a “lolly shop” for grown-ups - they looked no further than South Melbourne Market.

Since launching Gewürzhaus from a former ice-cream shop in Lygon Street, Carlton, in 2010, the pair have since opened a further five stores, specialising in unique small-batch blends of herbs, spices and teas that evoke memories of their spice-filled German upbringing.

Their seventh outlet, offering more than 350 single-origin spices, herbs, salts, peppers, teas and sugars from around the world, opened at South Melbourne Market on Friday, November 1 and is being described as a match made in heaven.

Gewürzhaus mixes and mills over 100 unique small-batch blends right here in Melbourne, which are all exclusive to Gewürzhaus and served from their much-loved and wonderful-smelling self-scoop tubs or in their trademark, returnable glass jars.

The range includes single origin spices and herbs such as harissa and rose petal. There are also a number of blends including the delicious Christmas Feast blend ‘Crunchy Pork Crackling Rub’ that we sampled and loved.

These high-quality ingredients make it easy to create new recipes and traditions that can be cherished for generations to come.

Gewürzhaus’ spices, herbs, specialty teas and salts are available loose in self-scoop bins (price based on weight) and also in jars, starting from $6.95. Customers receive 10 per cent off their next purchase when they return their jars for a refill.

Gewürzhaus can be found at Shop 3, in the Food Hall, South Melbourne Market, Corner of Coventry and Cecil Streets, South Melbourne. Find out more here.
