Hawker Hall

Yet another class act from The Lucas Group, Hawker Hall pleases with Malaysian and Singaporean hawker food served with a modern twist.

The atmosphere is great - You can be there any night of the day and the place will be pumping. You hear woks being tossed, sizzles from the satays cooking on the grill, all against a hip hop, R&B backdrop courtesy of the DJ. The venue is slick with clear inspiration from the hawker halls in South East Asia (like the brightly lit mock hawker stall signs - very schmick indeed).

Chris Lucas' experiences through Asia and being immersed in its food culture translates into a menu which satisfies Melbourne’s unquenchable thirst for South East Asian cuisine. Perfect to wash down with their wonderful range of Shiki beers.

We begin with a couple of starters. The pork‭ and ‬chive wontons were an absolute highlight. We loved the velvety wonton pastry which was beautiful in texture and the accompanying sea of chilli‭ and black bean sauce was pleasantly appetising. Cooked with the perfect amount of heat, these wontons tantalised our taste buds. The chilli squid with sambal belachan was similarly delicious. Succulent, aromatic, freshly grilled squid was authentically served with cucumber alongside decadent and perfectly spiced sambal.

For mains the full-bodied, pungent penang duck curry with peanuts and eggplant was stunning. We recommend ordering this dish with roti which is the perfect canvas for the melt in your mouth morsels of duck.

Continuing the trend of the evening, the chicken tikka was excellent. The chicken was wonderfully flavoursome and boasted a beautiful outer charring. The addition of coconut yoghurt, chilli and lemon was a masterstroke which provided balance to the dish. Just beautiful.

Our evening concluded on a sweet note with a duo of desserts. The first, a modern take on the traditional roti. Flaky roti was filled with gooey stewed apples to form a "pie" of sorts and served with decadent burnt caramel ice cream. The second, an Asian take on the sticky date pudding. This one featured red dates and was moreishly moist and went perfectly with the lashings of coconut caramel.

Hawker Hall, embodies the Malaysian and Singaporean night market with delightful dishes that are sure to please.
