Laksa King Kitchen

The legends behind Laksa King have just opened a brand spanking new outlet – Laksa King Kitchen in Flemington. Bringing a touch of Malaysia to Flemington, the menu offers a wide range of laksas and other delights in a warm and welcoming environment without a hefty price tag.

The menu channels the spirit of Malaysian hawker-style eating centres in Kuala Lumpur, where locals gather to catch up and share tasty hawker favourites. The menu features a wide array of options.

A visit to Laksa King Kitchen is of course incomplete without a bowl of their amazing laksa. The famed curry laksa is simply comfort food at its best, with a classical mix of vermicelli and Hokkien noodles swimming in a delicious soup base that is balanced carefully by coconut milk and curry spices. However, there is so much more to Laksa King Kitchen then just laksa!

Our dinner commenced with a few small plates. Each item was full of flavour and meticulously prepared. Of particular note was the Peking duck bun. We loved the wonderfully fluffy bao buns encasing luscious duck meat and traditional hoisin sauce and fresh cucumber. It was a thing of beauty.

Another crowd pleaser was the Lobak. The Lobak is a mixture of ground up lean pork, water chestnuts and herbs wrapped in a beancurd skin which has been steamed and then pan fried until crisp. The crispy beancurd exterior, juicy interior and salty-sweet chilli sauce makes for an excellent appetiser.

The satay chicken skewers were again, delicious. Tender grilled chicken meat skewers were slathered in rich spiced peanut sauce - nothing short of yum!

For the main affair the Tamarind confit duck was outstanding. Duck leg has been marinated and deep fried to a crisp perfection and served with umami laden coriander and tamarind sauce. It was simply delicious. For something lighter, the salmon fillet with Thai dressing is just beautiful – Pan fried salmon with served with aromatic lemongrass, coriander, chilli, lemon and lime sauce.

If you’re craving traditional Malaysian flavours then the Kangkong Belachan and Beef rendang will do the trick. Both these dishes were full-bodied and showcased the customary punchy flavours exhibited by Malaysian dishes generally.

The desserts at Laksa King Kitchen were also lovely. The Chendol was a decadent and textural dessert of green pea jelly, red bean, palm sugar and coconut milk. The Mango Pudding was yet another scrumptious dessert with beautifully balanced flavours. We loved the delicious addition of creamy mango ice cream and jackfruit chips.

The new Laksa King Kitchen in Flemington brings delicious Hawker-oriented Malaysian fare to the table. Popular favourites are featured alongside lesser known options - but all stay true to the hawker spirit by focusing on authentic flavours at prices that won’t hurt the hip pocked. We will definitely be back.
