Tim Ho Wan
/It's been a little while since the opening of Master of Dim Sum, Chef Mak Kwai Pui's first Melbourne restaurant, Tim Ho Wan. And the crowds are still flooding in.
Tim Ho Wan, otherwise known as the most affordable Michelin rated restaurant in the world, has a big mantel to uphold by honouring the original Michelin Star restaurant's ethos of selecting only ingredients of pristine quality and making every single dim sum dish to order. Tim Ho Wan worked with farmers and suppliers across Victoria to source the menu's rare ingredients a full year in advance to secure consistently fresh and quality produce, which is the cornerstone of all Tim Ho Wan dishes.
Having dined at the original Michelin rated Tim Ho Wan in Hong Kong, we were pleased to see all the Tim Ho Wan showstoppers we loved on the Melbourne menu, served a la carte, with the signature Tim Ho Wan Pork Bun taking centre stage, supported by a chorus line of the Big 4 Heavenly Kings.
The Tim Ho Wan Pork Bun is like no other. Being baked not steamed is the main difference, but there is so much more that goes into preparing this perfect morsel of melt in your mouth deliciousness. The use of secret techniques, quality ingredients and pastry mastery combine to create a pork bun that rules them all. Chef Mak Kwai Pui's has even imported a specialty oven where the heat is distributed evenly and correctly. The result is a rich yellow (almost gold) pork bun exhibiting a fluffy light texture and scrumptious barbeque pork filling.
The Big 4 Heavenly Kings (named after the four Buddhist protective deities) are a selection of Tim Ho Wan menu favourites which include, in addition to Tim Ho Wan’s signature baked Pork Bun, vermicelli rice paper rolls, pan-fried turnip cake and steamed egg cake.
Not to be outshone is the Spinach Dumpling with shrimp. Whilst not a "Heavenly King", this dumpling deserves royalty status - delicate pastry, wonderfully fresh wilted spinach and juicy shrimp which is perfectly seasoned. Yum.
With a reputation that precedes itself, we can happily say that Tim Ho Wan is certainly not overrated. Offering some of the best dim sum experiences in Melbourne, expect everything to be executed to perfection using quality ingredients.
