VIP Launch of the Appleton Trail in Melbourne
/Melbourne has cemented itself as Australia’s Culinary Capital, it can also boast to having some of the best rum bars, which made it fitting to launch the ‘Appleton Trail’ at Loop Roof. The vibrant and lush Jamaican surroundings intrigued the senses for what was to follow.
We had the pleasure of being provided a brief background on the richness of the rum’s origin. The oldest sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica, the Appleton Estate has been crafting Jamaican Rums for over 265 years. Nestled in the Nassau Valley in the heart of Jamaica, all Appleton Estate rums are produced on the estate. It is also only one of a few rums in the world to claim a ‘terroir’ – the unique combination of weather, soil and geographical influences impart to each rums complex flavours.
The Appleton Estate Signature Blend was the starting point, aged for approx. four years; the rum had a beautiful amber gold colour, a smooth initial taste with subtle citrus notes, orange, peach and mild sweetness to end.
The Appleton Estate Reserve Blend, aged for approx. 6 years; more full-bodied rum, the initial taste had a hint of spice and oak flavours, the subtle hints of vanilla and orange provide a smooth aftertaste.
The Appleton Estate Rare Blend aged for approx. 12 years; would have to be my favourite of the three. The rum’s rich dark amber red colour and rich oak smell hits the senses. The initial taste is strong with the dominants of oak flavour, hints of vanilla and orange and subtle smokiness from the toasted oak and almond. The aftertaste although is smooth and sweet, one to certainly enjoy as sipping rum.
The Appleton Estate Signature Blend combined in their four signature cocktails displayed the enjoyable taste and would be a must for all cocktail fans. ‘The Trail Less Travelled’, which combined the refreshing taste of cranberry and pomegranate juice was my pick for the night.
This Jamaican Rum certainly has delivered and is a great addition to the Australian Rum market.
