Appleton Estate Reserve Blend
/Appleton Estate have been creating authentic Jamaican rums in the Cockpit Country – a unique, lush and fertile terrain at the island’s heart for over 265 years, exporting the warmth, passion and unique spirit of Jamaica around the world in each handcrafted bottle. The brands luxurious original rums have well and truly made their way to Australia.
Appleton Estate has the distinction of being the oldest sugar estate and distillery in Jamaica in continuous production. The first documented rum production dates from 1749, however, it is believed the origins of the Estate date back to Sir Francis Dickenson in 1655. Its long, passionate history has elevated rum production to an art and it’s one of the few rums in the world to claim a terroir – the unique weather, soil and geographic demarcations that impart a unique quality to all its rums.
Each step in the production process is carefully managed, from selection of estate-grown sugarcane varieties, to the natural yeast culture used in fermentation, to the limestone spring that supplies the water. Master blender, Joy Spence, is the first woman to be appointed Master Blender in the world, and her unique distillation and blending methods result in beautifully complex and aromatic rums designed for sipping and blending.
All Appleton Estate rums are aged in 40-gallon Number One Select American Oak barrels, which impart more vanilla flavour and make them smoother and less woody.
We absolutely adored the Appleton Estate Reserve Blend (pictured above). A rich, complex and sensuous flavour journey, this rum is full-bodied, smooth, and delicately balanced. We loved the spice and nutty notes, followed by oaky honey, subtle vanilla, and a hint of hazelnut – all wrapped in rich, dried orange peel. It’s reminiscent of a spicy fruitcake. Its finish is balanced, yet lingering with echoes of wood.
