Ocha

Occupying its now familiar location in the Bee Hive complex in Hawthorn, over the past 16 years Ocha has become a Melbourne institution. This is no surprise given the excellent contemporary Japanese dishes flowing from the kitchen.

Inside, the the dining room feels upmarket in a warm and intimate way - a relaxing place to settle in and indulge. The menu, crafted by chef and co-owner Yasu Yoshida utilises traditional Japanese techniques to craft contemporary interpretations which are best shared.

The quality and freshness of the produce is spectacular, from the oysters with wasabi foam, grilled hokkaido scallops and absolutely stunning BBQ scampi with spicy yuzu and garlic butter, all of the seafood was exquisitely fresh from the sea. The lamb backstop with ponzu was similarly sensational, boasting exceptional balance and the thin slices of duck breast were perfectly cooked and delectable. As expected, Ocha also serves wonderful sushi and sashimi.

Desserts are not neglected and, to finish, we indulged in a playful and imaginative take on a banana split - sweet, decadent and textural courtesy of the hazelnut meringue and Persian fairy floss.

The warm ambience, excellently executed dishes utilising the freshest of produce and attentive service explain Ocha’s longevity. Owners Michelle Rogerson and Yasu Yoshida have created a welcoming restaurant that is well worth a visit.
