Panama Dining Room
/Panama Dining Room is regularly described as one of Melbourne's most popular restaurants – a versatile space for functions, to have a drink at the bar or indulge in a decadent dinner of Modern European cuisine.
Diners are rewarded for their staircase climbing endeavours - floor to ceiling arched windows surround the large, airy space and provide a view that captures the surrounding suburbs and city skyline. Lofty lounges, a large pool table and elegant furnishings result in a comfortable, modern and chic space.
Cocktails and craft beer are their main suit, complimented by a great wine list with a strong back-bar.
Apart from the ability to offer a full-bar experience with live DJ's, the quality of the food on offer is commendable. The kitchen is headed by well-known chef Ayhan Erkoc whose resume includes stints at both Pier and Marque in Sydney as well as world number 1 restaurant, Noma. Ayhan was previously the executive chef at The Manse in Adelaide before opening his own place called Celsius. Joining Ayhan in the kitchen is Jonathan Corso, the former head chef of The Grand, Richmond.
Our feast began with the grilled saganaki, honey, oregano, pistachio. The marriage of salty pan-seared Kefalograviera - a robust sheep milk cheese originating from Greece - with sweet honey caramelised oregano and pistachio was an unbeatable combination. With the added textural kick from the chewiness of the cheese, this dish was a highly addictive appetiser.
For mains the duck was superb. The generous slices of duck breast were beautifully cooked, allowing the rich flavour of the duck to shine through. The luxurious caramelised yoghurt and flavoursome dukkah provided crowning elements to this dish.
The market fish served with zucchini, clams, mussel, cannellini beans and dill was similarly excellent.
A wonderfully modern dessert simply described as "Popcorn, toasted custard, caramel" concluded our meal. The decadent flavour of fresh buttered popcorn ran through the core of this dish, marrying together successfully with the creaminess of the custard and decadence of the caramel. We savoured every spoonful.
