Passage Thru Malaysia
/Located in Greensborough, Passage Thru Malaysia is a neighbourhood gem which channels the spirit of Malaysian hawker-style eating centres in Kuala Lumpur, where locals gather to catch up and share tasty hawker favourites.
The menu features a wide array of options and as owner Jerena Teo explains, “Choose whatever you like - it’s all good!” And it’s true, you can’t really go wrong here.
Our dining experience commenced with a couple of items from their famous signature tapas menu. Each item was full of flavour and meticulously prepared. Of particular note was the Nestum Prawns. Aromatic, light and crunchy nestum battered prawns had been fried to perfection. The curry chicken mantou was similarly delicious. We loved the fluffy deep fried mantou that was the perfect canvas to soak up the rich curry.
For mains we fell head over heels for the sambal squid. The squid was tender and adorned in the most luscious and heady sambal sauce. Expect a delightful balance of spiciness, slight tartness, saltiness and sweetness – it’s that magic combination that makes your tastebuds tingle.
If you want something heartier, the Butter Chicken (Lai Yao Kei) is not to be missed. Not to be mistaken for the popular Indian butter chicken curry dish, this is a thoroughly Malaysian version that has no resemblance to the Indian butter chicken at all. Here, chicken cubes are deep fried and then wok stir fried with chillies and curry leaves till fragrant and finally boiled with evaporated milk. As strange as this sounds, rest assured it’s a stunner and is one of those addictive dishes you simply cannot get enough of.
