Product review: Para'kito | Win a Para'kito pack!

Nothing beats some outdoor fun with mates. Whether you’re camping in the Northern Territory, fishing off the coast of Western Australia, or simply enjoying a BBQ in Brisbane, it's always handy to have mosquito and insect protection devices on hand.

We were recently at a BBQ at Ruffey Lake Park and thought it would be an opportune time to try out Para'Kito -  a 100 percent natural eco-friendly mosquito and insect protection device.

A European quality product, we liked that Para'Kito is both lightweight and completely waterproof, making it really easy to use.

A natural and safe alternative to other products on the market, Para’Kito is ideal for adults, children, babies, pregnant women and allergy sufferers alike, as it has no direct contact with the skin, leaves no unpleasant odour and offers 24 hour protection from mosquitoes and insects.

A unique blend of seven essential oils including; lavender, geranium, citronella, pine tree, patchouli, clove and peppermint is infused into the heart of a polymer pellet, which slips easily into your Para’Kito wristband or clip.

These patented oils mask the presence of humans from mosquitos for 15 days effectively making the wearer invisible, even when coming in contact with water, eliminating the need for reapplying sticky chemical sprays.

The Para’Kito clip is particularly handy (it easily attaches to a back pack, belt, or can be hung inside a tent when sleeping) as well as for babies – just hang it from their pram or stroller. We found the clip useful to clip near the tables where we sat at the BBQ as it kept the mossies at bay. The kids on the other hand really liked the neoprene wristband as they could choose from a range of colours available.

Product Review: Richmond chicken curry paste

This post was sponsored by MATRADE's Malaysian Kitchen Program.
We love the smell of a delicious curry wafting through the kitchen. And with Malaysian curry recipe bases available at every Asian grocery store, whipping up a big pot of chicken curry is quick and easy.
Although not traditional, we add chickpeas, eggplant and carrots into our version as we think they make the dish really delicious! But for a more traditional version of the classic Malaysian chicken curry simply leave these ingredients out.

Ingredients

Richmond Chicken Curry Paste 250g from Oriental Merchant
125 ml coconut milk from Oriental Merchant
1.25kg chicken thighs
½ tsp sugar
½ tsp salt
1 can of chick peas
1 eggplant, cut into pieces, brushed with oil and baked in the oven until soft
2 chopped carrots
3 potatoes sliced into quarters
150 ml water
Cooking instructions

This recipe could not be easier. Simply cut the chicken into pieces and lightly fry with Richmond Chicken Curry Paste for 5 minutes on medium heat. Add all other ingredients into the pot and bring to boil until potatoes are soft. Serve with steamed rice. ENJOY!

Spiral Foods Introduces New VeríVal Organic Cereals

Gastrology bloggers received the product courtesy of Spiral Foods.
Brought to Australia for the first time by the good folk at Spiral Foods, VeríVal’s delicious range of organic, wholesome muesli and porridge makes it easy to start your day the right way.

VeríVal is lovingly hand mixed and packaged in the pristine Tyrolean Alps of Austria. Blending the highest quality organic ingredients and with a wide variety of interesting and healthy blends to choose from, even the fussiest of palates are catered for. We absolutely loved the surprising blends we received.
Toasted Muesli with Carrot and Apricot

The Carrot and Apricot toasted muesli was beautiful. While the addition of carrot took us back a bit when we read the description, we are pleased to report that this was surprisingly delicious. A mix of oat, barley and spelt flakes with a mixture of carrots, apricots and cinnamon, the muesli possesses just the perfect amount of sweetness thanks to the apricot and honey and each spoonful is delectably crunchy from the coating of nut purée.
Heritage Grains Muesli with Berries

The Heritage Grains Muesli with Berries invigorated the senses with the zest of the berries. Made from flaked wholegrain oats and wheat with a blend of elderberry & acerola rice crispies, blackberries, cranberries, redcurrants and blackcurrants, raspberry and strawberry pieces and unsweetened cornflakes, it was a pleasant blend of unique flavours.
Crunchy Orange and Acerola Berry Clusters sweetened with Austrian beet sugar

The Crunchy Orange and Acerola Berry Clusters were our favourite muesli. Comprising of crunchy clusters of oats and barley, sweetened with Austrian beet sugar, flavoured with acerola cherry powder and orange oil these morsels of goodness tasted like aromatic orange cookies. We loved how perfectly toasted and crunchy they were.
Spiral’s organic VeríVal products have no artificial colours, flavours or preservatives. Each of the three flavours we tried were bursting with the goodness of whole grains, roasted nuts and juicy summer fruits, making them the perfect solution to a simple, healthy breakfast on the move.

Spiral’s organic VeríVal products are stocked in a range of health food stores and independent suppliers around Australia.

Product Review: Teans Gourmet Malaysian Traditional Curry Laksa Paste

This post was sponsored by MATRADE's Malaysian Kitchen Program.

One of the more popular Malaysian hawker dishes in Melbourne is the curry laksa. Referred by Malaysians as "Kari Mee", this big bowl of decadent broth is comfort food at it's best. The coconut milk in the broth is soothing and alleviates a lot of the heat, making it a great introduction to spicy food for the uninitiated.

We loved how simple the  Teans Gourmet Malaysian Traditional Curry Laksa Paste is to use. All it takes is literally 15 minutes for you to have your very own  bowl of traditional Malaysian curry laksa noodles!
Cooking Instructions:

  1. Mix 1 packet of Tean's Gourmet Curry Laksa Paste in 1500ml boiling water.
  2. Add in 150ml thick coconut milk from 1 coconut and 100g fried tofu. Bring to a quick boil and switch to low fire.
  3. Blanch 600g fresh egg noodles and 60g bean sprouts, divide into 6 portions and put in 6 big bowls.
  4. Add slices of cooked meat and fish balls, 1/4 hard-boiled egg and some mint leaves on each bowl of noodles.
  5.  Pour hot curry laksa soup into the bowl of noodles and serve hot.
  6. ENJOY!
Teans Gourmet Malaysian Traditional Curry Laksa Paste is available from  Asian Grocery Store

Spiral Foods Product Reviews: Dip & Toss Pasta Oils | Organic Sugo | Chunky Tapenades

Gastrology bloggers received the products courtesy of Spiral Foods.
Spiral Foods takes the pressure off dinner parties with its versatile new range of Dip & Toss Pasta Oils; Organic Sugo; and Chunky Tapenades.
Spiral Foods products have no added preservatives or flavours and are NONGMO.

Spiral’s Dip & Toss Pasta Oils
Available in Rosemary & Garlic; Sun Dried Tomato & Basil; and Basil & Parmesan, we loved both the aroma and the rich taste of the Dip & Toss Pasta Oils courtesy of being made from fresh herbs, spices and premium quality cold-pressed Extra Virgin Olive Oil.

We enjoyed Spiral’s Dip & Toss Pasta Oils simply used as a dip with crusty fresh bread…
And also enjoyed tossing the oils through our home made pumpkin ravioli…
The oils are very versatile. Their use ranges from being drizzled over pizza for aroma and flavour to being used as a salad dressing.

Organic Sugos
Lovely with fresh pasta, the Sugos were also a delight as a base for a chicken cacciatore dish we had and brilliant with pasta.
The Organic Sugos are available in three varieties: Basil & Garlic, Arrabiata and Primavera.
Made from plump organic tomatoes and fresh herbs the Organic Sugos are rich, robust, and tempered with the smoothness of Extra Virgin Olive Oil. The Organic Sugos also pair very well with the Dip & Toss Oils, which together, bring a flourish of flavours.

Chunky Tapenades
The Chunky Tapenades are Spiral Foods’ newest range of spreads and are made from roughly chopped olives and premium quality olive oil. The tapenades are available in three varieties: Green Olive; Black Olive; and Muffuletta. The tapenades were bold and full bodied. It was clear that they were made from good quality ingredients.
The Green Olive tapenade is full of flavour with a hint of capers and chilli, while the Black Olive is bold with the moreish taste of ripe Kalamata olives. The Muffuletta is made from a combination of both green and black olives, with roasted red peppers adding a subtle sweetness.
We loved the tapenades’ homemade taste and appearance. We thought that these tapenades were the perfect appetiser, when accompanied with crunchy bread.

Product Review: Tyrrells English Crisps

Gastrology bloggers received the product courtesy of Tyrrells English Crisps.
There is a new chip on the block for all chip devotees. Tyrrells crisps, one of UK’s largest maker of up-market chips, has made its first foray into the Aussie market.
The crisps are hand-cut and hand-cooked and spun for a less greasy, more delicate chip. They have much lower sodium content and contain natural flavours and no MSG. Many of the flavours are also gluten free - think sweet chilli & red pepper, cheddar cheese & chive, and tangy sea salt & cider vinegar.
Tyrrells Crisps is a British crisp company who are known around the world (currently stocked in over 30 countries) for their quintessentially British snacks.

We loved how extra-crunchy the crisps were and enjoyed the lighter, more delicate flavours, courtesy of being made from natural flavours instead of MSG.
Our favourite flavour of the bunch was the Mature Cheddar & Chive which boasted a little British flair – simply irresistible.

Product Review: UNCLE TOBYS Oats Quick Sachets

This is a Nuffnang Product Talk
UNCLE TOBYS Oats Quick Sachets are a convenient and tasty oats option, perfect for busy people.
We tried the sachets and they were each tasty and VERY easy to prepare and mess-free. All you need to do is…
  1. Add milk (or water) and stir to mix;
  2. Microwave on high for 90 seconds, stir; and
  3. Allow to cool slightly before serving.

Just a note on using water though, it is significantly less flavoursome if you use water. It tastes far superior with milk!
We also loved the fact that the oats do not contain any artificial colours or flavours.

‘Dream mornings’ – what’s your idea of a dream/ideal morning?

My dream morning is being able to start my day with a quick run around Albert Park. We’re all busy and often it is tough to find time for some me-time. So, if you’re always on the lookout for easy and healthy brekkie solutions, the quick sachets are definitely worth checking out cause let’s be honest, spending ages making breakfast isn’t very appealing - “ain’t nobody got time for that”.

Review: Chilton's Artisan Pies

Gastrology bloggers received the pies courtesy of Chilton's Artisan Foods.
With winter officially here, it was the perfect opportunity to dig into Chilton’s delicately handmade pies – each freshly made in their kitchen.

Chilton's Artisan Foods has been quietly making pies and other savoury foods for Australian families for years, having now developed over 250 lines of savoury foods from pies to quiches, frittatas and pasties.
Managing Director of Chilton's Artisan Foods, Phillip Marzella (who is known as the ultimate pie lover) has a long family history in connoisseur foods. His grandfather was the only baker in a small town, baking bread during the night for young partisans during WWII while his grandmother an accomplished pasta maker served fresh pasta to orphans. So, you can say making good food is in Phillip’s blood.

When Phillip came to Australia in the early 80’s his first part-time job as a fifteen year old was working with the original Piero Brunetti founder of the Brunetti cakes store. Today he’s excited about making everyone’s mealtime easy by serving up a homemade pie that not only tastes great but saves you having to make it.
What was apparent was the use of fresh, quality ingredients with uncompromising flavours, courtesy of being handmade with artisanal care.
Chilton’s pie pastry (a prime component of any excellent pie), was the perfect canvas in which to dunk in the gravied juices. Each pie pastry was perfectly made – a testament to being worked carefully by pastry maker, Maria (better known as ‘nonna’ in the Chilton’s kitchen) to give the fluffiest and softest crisp.
Lamb & Rosemary pie

While it was difficult to pick a favourite, the lamb & rosemary pie was probably our favourite - I say “probably” because to be honest, we loved each and every pie.

The classic combination of lamb and rosemary worked an absolute treat. Rich and hearty with generous morsels of beautifully slow cooked lamb, it was an excellent pie. The tender pieces of lamb combined flawless texture with equally superlative flavours. It was a pleasure to mop the decadent gravy up with the pie pastry. Yum!
Serving Chilton's pie was magnificently easy - all we had to do was pop the pies in the oven, put our feet up and enjoy some wine while dinner was being prepared.
Whether it's the Lamb and Rosemary, Chicken & Vegetable, Beef & Red Wine or Cauliflower Leek & Cheese pie - we can attest to their deliciousness. Each gold-crusted and welcoming, these pies make the sort of dinner that you cook without any special effort but with plenty of gratification.

Bourbon Street - new lunch and catering delivery service

Gastrology bloggers dined courtesy of Bourbon Street.
Having opened only for a few months (March 2014) Bourbon Street, a lunch delivery and catering service based in South Melbourne, has already proven a hit. With its roots deeply ingrained in Blues music, Bourbon Street includes in its menu mouth-watering BBQ Beef, Pulled Pork and other Cajun delicatessens, with gluten free and vegetarian options.
Pulled Pork with brown rice

The pulled pork was a winner, imparting a unique flavour that comes only from genuine slow cooking over charcoal. It was beautifully tender, courtesy of being slow cooked for 12 hours and was slathered in a beautiful coffee-infused BBQ sauce and served with fresh apple slaw.
Left: Candied Walnuts soaked in Bourbon and roasted with a hint of spice 'til they're crunchy.
Right: Crispy Kale Chips coated in chilli and smoked paprika.
Chili Sin Carne

A sinful sandwich of smokey, spiced beans cooked for 6 hours, the sandwich was topped with tasty cheese and delectably hedonistic corn chips. It was incredibly satisfying.

Bourbon Street is a brilliant new addition to Melbourne’s foodie scene, offering a delicious approach to lunch time by providing easier, more convenient access to high-quality and filling meals.

What: Bourbon Street lunch and catering delivery

Takeaway Review: Salon de Sushi | Ordered in via Menulog

Gastrology bloggers dined courtesy of Menulog.
Location: 293 Clarendon St South Melbourne
Phone: 03 9939 3723
Cuisine: Japanese
Overall Impression: 7/10
We recently ordered in a Japanese feast to enjoy at home via Menulog's Southbank Take-Away Restaurants link. We have visited Salon de Sushi on several occasions and have been consistently pleased by the quality of their nigiri and sushi.
We were pleased that our delivery arrived as scheduled.

The selection of nigiri we ordered tasted fresh with sushi rice that was desirably moist. Of particular note were the scallop nigiri and eel nigiri. The scallop nigiri was well crafted. The sweet scallops were absolutely delicious. The slices of grilled eel that lay upon the eel nigiri were cooked in a lovely sweet soy sauce. We loved the fatty flesh that melted away in our mouths.
Salon de Sushi is one of the better value Japanese cuisine that Melbourne has to offer. While not the best Japanese cuisine we have tasted, the reasonable price tag, delivery convenience and quality ingredients used makes this restaurant one we would highly recommend.
